The Wildcats (7-5, 3-5 SEC) have lost 18 straight games to the Volunteers. • Thoughts about a great trip to Maui    Aloha and Happy Thanksgiving. Kentucky played a good game Wednesday (to beat Gonzaga) and the cynical UK fans, including me, are off the Chicken Little theme where the sky is falling. Well, at least for a few days any way.
  • From our paradise lost and found box    Sifting through the Maui Invitational Lost & Found and figuring out what we've learned in paradise.
  • Maui Invitational helped freshmen find their place    The University of Kentucky's three freshman basketball players -- Kelenna Azubuike, Bernard Cote and Brandon Stockton -- played in the Wildcats' three games at the Maui Invitational, and their roles are taking shape.
  • These Cats learn from their mistakes    Aloha means hello and goodbye. Mahalo means thank you. And Kentucky's play in the Maui Invitational this week begged a question: What are the Hawaiian words that say a basketball team made tangible progress in three games?
  • KEN AZUBUIKE DENIES DEFRAUDING INVESTORS    When Kelenna Azubuike joined the University of Kentucky basketball team, he brought strong moves to the basket, strong Christian faith and something else: a father who has stirred up strong feelings in their former hometown of Tulsa, Okla

  • Cats tower over Zags    Kentucky's Jules Camara and Marquis Estill might not be known nationally by that nickname of choice for dominating duos: Twin Towers.
  • Victory guarantees Wildcats will fly the friendly skies    Talk all you want about the sting of defeat and the need for redemption, but when it came to Kentucky, and it came to yesterday, there was one mighty morsel of Maui motivation.
  • Kentucky holds off Gonzaga in Maui     Keith Bogans scored 18 points and No. 15 Kentucky handled a zone defense much better than it did in its previous game and beat No. 20 Gonzaga 80-72 yesterday to finish third in the Maui Invitational.
  • Hayes breaks out after mom's talk    To cure what ailed Kentucky forward Chuck Hayes, mother knew best. Hayes erupted for 11 points and nine rebounds to help UK beat Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational yesterday. He cited some direct talk from his mother, Tracey, for the break-out performance.
  • Kentucky 80, Gonzaga 72
  • Cats crash the zone    The University of Kentucky basketball team figured out how to beat a zone defense. Now the Wildcats need to find a way to keep Marquis Estill and Jules Camara on the floor.
  • Gonzaga star runs into tall blue wall    Ronny Turiaf hit Maui like a 35-foot wave. In his first two games here, the Gonzaga center turned the paint into his personal playpen.
  • Fitch adjusts to role at point    After not exactly embracing the point guard role in the University of Kentucky's four games this season, junior guard Gerald Fitch played the role perfectly both offensively and defensively Wednesday night.
  • Wildcats go to work inside    It took a night watching the ugly film of its game against Virginia to help the University of Kentucky understand how to better attack a zone defense.

  • These Cats Can Run    Eli, Rex, Cadillac, Kelley, they've all had their problems. Artose - pronounced ar-TUSE - might be the man.
  • 'Cats remember turkey-week dressing    Maybe the Kentucky football team got hold of some bad turkey, but the Thanksgiving holiday wasn't too good to the Wildcats last season.
  • Tennessee Looks To Be Balanced Like UK    Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer likes a good balance of running the ball and passing. He sees that when he watches the Kentucky Wildcats.
  • Jones slow to catch on in college    Things came so easy on the football field for Montrell Jones that it was becoming scary. Blessed with a sleek 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame and soft hands, Jones seemingly toyed with Kentucky high school competition while at Male, setting state records in career receptions and touchdown catches in earning 2000 Mr. Football honors
  • Kentucky Wildcats Report        Morriss can't get no satisfaction   Although the University of Kentucky football team will finish with its first winning season since 1998, coach Guy Morriss is not calling it a watershed year just yet.

  • No. 15 Wildcats Go Inside and Over No. 20 Gonzaga, 80-72    Keith Bogans scored 18 points and No. 15 Kentucky handled a zone defense much better than it did in its previous game and beat No. 20 Gonzaga 80-72 Wednesday to finish third in the Maui Invitational. • UK Prepares For First Round of the Seattle Times Husky Classic    The University of Kentucky women's basketball team arrived in Seattle, Wash., on Wednesday where it will spend the Thanksgiving holiday participating in the 16th annual Seattle Husky Times Classic Nov. 29-30 at Washington's Bank of America Arena.
  • Slowdown TubbyBall returns to court    All this talk about the University of Kentucky's new up-tempo, allhands-handle, rip-and-run offense? An October campaign promise, that's all. Come crunch time, back comes the usual slowdown.
  • Going cold in Hawaii    UK went scoreless for a stretch of 8:39 in the first half.
  • 'Cats' storied history doesn't frighten Gonzaga    Even though the University of Kentucky basketball program has made 43 NCAA Tournament appearances, won seven national championships and made 13 Final Four appearances, don't expect the Gonzaga Bulldogs to be intimidated when they play the Wildcats for the first time today.
  • 'Cats play role of trouble shooter    The Pacific Ocean is only a few hundred yards away from the Lahaina Civic Center, but if members of the University of Kentucky basketball team had walked those few hundreds and then shot a basketball toward it on Tuesday night, chances are the ball probably wouldn't have hit water.
  • Kentucky vs. Gonzaga Notes    After a 51% shooting effort against Arizona State on Monday, the Wildcats shot just 37.3% from the field as Virginia fought back from a nine-point first-half deficit to earn a 75-61 victory. The win advanced the Cavaliers into the Maui Invitational Championship game while Kentucky fell into a battle for third-place with Gonzaga
  • At this point, Estill the glue that holds the Big Blue    Five minutes in, he had scored 10 points. Five minutes in, 'Quis Estill was ex-Quis-ite, gobbling glass, throwing down jams, scoring at his ever-loving will. Five minutes in, the Cats seemed dead-set for a second straight Hawaiian pleasure cruise.
  • Virginia zones in on Cats    Despite its much-promoted "unparalleled tradition," its 100th-season celebration and its No. 15 ranking, Kentucky had no shot to beat unranked Virginia yesterday.
  • Zags get shot at another giant: UK    Gonzaga, the proverbial little brother of college basketball, lost to Indiana 76-75 yesterday in the Maui Invitational. But the Zags get another crack against a perennial power today: Kentucky.
  • Virginia 75, Kentucky 61
  • Cavs put IU vs. UK on hold    Virginia's Pete Gillen said he isn't a zone coach. The University of Kentucky basketball team might argue that point after shooting 37.3 percent against the Cavaliers' zone in a 75-61 loss yesterday in a Maui Invitational semifinal game.

  • UK eyes rare win in Knoxville    Kentucky's not going to a bowl, and the Wildcats aren't treating the final game at Tennessee as one either.
  • Injuries have taken a toll on Vols' year    In the football world, things operate a little differently in Knoxville than they do in Lexington. For example, a 7-4 record in Lexington got Kentucky Coach Guy Morriss a new contract and has helped alleviate the aftermath of NCAA probation.
  • Kentucky Football Notebook    The "Shoulda Been a Bowl Party" will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, at Rupp Arena, and fans are invited to come and watch the Kentucky at Tennessee football game ... Tennessee tickets

     Basketball

  • No. 15 Wildcats Upset By Cavaliers    Devin Smith hit three 3-pointers in the final six minutes - one more than Kentucky managed in the game - and Virginia beat the 15th-ranked Wildcats 75-61 Tuesday in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational. Smith, a 6-foot-5 junior college transfer, was 2-for-7 from 3-point range in the Cavaliers' first two games of the season but he made three of four from beyond the arc in the last six minutes of the game. Virginia (3-0) will play in Wednesday night's championship game against either No. 19 Indiana or No. 20 Gonzaga.
  • Bogans, Wildcats heat up in Hawaii    It apparently took a trip to paradise for the University of Kentucky to warm up its shooting touch and for the Wildcats to turn up the heat defensively.
  • Tubby relies more on 2-3 zone     Like seemingly all basketball coaches University of Kentucky coach Tubby Smith would rather play man-to-man defense than zone, but he used a 2-3 zone for significant stretches in Monday's 82-65 season-opening win over Arizona State in the first round of the Maui Invitational.
  • Kentucky vs. Virginia
  • THESE UK FAITHFUL ACTUALLY YELL AS TEAM ENJOYS RESTORATIVE POWERS OF THE ISLANDS    Amazing what a little time in the islands can do. A little time for rest and recovery, reclamation and restoration. A little time to get over your aches and your shooting pains.
  • Cats heat up in Hawaii    Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith went into the Maui Invitational wondering how much his team had learned from its poor pre-season. Answer: Quite a bit.
  • Cats rely on Estill in victory    When University of Kentucky center Marquis Estill calls for the ball inside, his teammates are going to give it to him. The Wildcats established that in their season opener yesterday, using Estill to stem an Arizona State comeback and run away with an 82-65 victory in the first round of the Maui Invitational.
  • No shocker on 20th anniversary    After losing nine of nine first-round tournament games as Virginia coach, Pete Gillen broke his maiden yesterday. How did he do it? How did the Cavaliers beat Chaminade 86-72 on the 20th anniversary of the most famous Maui Invitational game?
  • UK women derail Southern Illinois 79-53 in opener    Everybody's doing a brand new dance now. After falling behind by four points at the half, the Kentucky women used a 25-3 run in the second half last night to break down Southern Illinois 79-53 in their season opener at Memorial Coliseum.

     Football

  • Morriss puts lid on Knoxville Bowl talk    At first it made sense to Guy Morriss. Since his Kentucky football team is ineligible for the post-season, the Wildcats initially were looking at the season finale at Tennessee as its bowl game. Running back Artose Pinner even labeled the game "The Knoxville Bowl" following UK's 41-21 victory over Vanderbilt.
  • Tennessee is no bowl substitute for UK    It might be tempting for the University of Kentucky football team to treat Saturday's game at Tennessee as a bowl game and to celebrate the trip to Knoxville as a cap to a successful season.
  • Begley enjoys first season as UK kicker    Taylor Begley will look back on his first season as the University of Kentucky's place-kicker with mixed emotions.

The Wildcats (1-0) opened a 20-point lead in the first half and were up 43-30 after shooting 53 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Kentucky, which shot 51 percent for the game (29-for-57) advanced to Tuesday's semifinals and will play either Utah or No. 20 Gonzaga. The win was the fifth consecutive season-opening victory for the Wildcats.
  • Coaches rally around Tubby    Tubby Smith and Rob Evans will be competitors in the Maui Invitational tonight. But they're also friends and colleagues. So as Kentucky's problem-filled 2001-2002 season unfolded (and nearly unraveled), Evans gave his friend a call.

He'll get a chance to do that tonight when UK tips off its 100th season of basketball against Arizona State at 9 EST in the first round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina Civic Center
  • A Changed Cat- Bogans stays at UK for the long haul    Today, it seems like it was only yesterday that he arrived at the University of Kentucky as a wide-eyed freshman with a stacked basketball resume.
  • Cats open tonight against Arizona State    Chuck Hayes knew Kentucky's trip to the Maui Invitational would not exactly be a vacation. Still, the UK sophomore was glad to at least finally being going to Hawaii.
  • SEC missing players    Think about these words for a second: transfer, dismissal, ineligibility, injury, and suspension. Preeminent teams in the SEC have had to issue press releases that include those ugly words all summer long. And there has been a rash of those releases recently.

  • Kentucky Basketball Preview    Smith vows to end woes of last year     New faces, new offense and no more troublemakers.
  • UK's blue chips are down, but Smith upbeat    For its basketball recruiting needs this year, Kentucky seemed to sift through garage sales and flea markets. The big-ticket prospects did not mention UK, let alone commit to the Cats. It was a stunning riches-to-rags story for a program that seems to make its annual selections from a catalog of high school All-Americans.
  • Cats Need A Marquee Estill    University of Kentucky center Marquis Estill has a lot to think about these days.
  • MAUI INVITATIONAL    Maui is Hawaii's second-most popular tourist destination. The island covers 727.2 square miles. Average temperatures range from the low to high 70s. Resident population is about 120,000, but the island attracts more than 2 million visitors each year. Popular attractions are the historic whaling town of Lahaina, the Maui Ocean Center, the slopes and vistas of Haleakala Crater, the winding road to Hana and the beaches of the Ka'anapali coast.
  • Scheduling shenanigans    Agree to play. Settle on a date. Sign a contract. Play. Scheduling is supposed to be that simple. But not for Kentucky to start this season. Daniels will sit out those games -- and miss the week-long trip to the Maui Invitational -- as punishment for playing in two summer basketball leagues, UK Coach Tubby Smith said yesterday. NCAA rules allow players to play in one sanctioned league per summer.
  • UK heading to Maui without Daniels    Kentucky coach Tubby Smith hopes to use his team's trip to Maui as a bonding experience for the players and coaching staff.

  • Smith staying positive with team    Late last season Kentucky coach Tubby Smith decided to stop being so critical of his team and tried to accentuate the positive rather than the negative.
  • CATS GIVE FANS REASON TO WORRY    The former faithful, now best described as fretful, were not, repeat not, tying the oversupply of bricks to their ankles and doing swan dives from the Rupp rafters on Monday night.

  • All Swoosh, no swish    After Keith Bogans missed a free throw late in the first half, a courtside spectator couldn't take it anymore. "Get somebody in there who can shoot!" he bellowed.

  • Nike just does it to UK    Exhibition basketball games don't count in the record, but don't tell that to the University of Kentucky's fans. Boos rained down on the Wildcats from the Rupp Arena crowd of 16,125 in the waning seconds of last night's 84-75 loss to Team Nike.
  • Learning curve slow for Wildcats    While professor Tubby Smith was willing to throw out his University of Kentucky basketball team's first exhibition test he wasn't so lenient Monday night, and the strange thing is it's the player on his team who is academically ineligible right now that he apparently desperately needs back if it is to ace the test of the regular season.

  • Azubuike says he can adjust to new role    Not every player can easily adjust to going from a high-scoring player in high school to a role player in college.
  • Cats' transition defense gets big boost in return of Camara    Jules Camara's back. So now Kentucky can at least claim that somebody's back ... in defensive transition, that is. And, UK hopes, in position to contest the driving layups in full- and half-court settings that Athletes in Action enjoyed in almost beating the Cats last week.

  • Hayes claws way into vital role with Cats    Chuck Hayes' arms display a road map of scratches and cuts. A scar above one eye serves as a reminder of a hard fall he took during practice. Above the other eye there's another scar from getting in the way of a teammate's elbow.

  • It's a bird, it's a plane, it's super Pinner!    On the floor of a phone booth somewhere in the city of Lexington lie the clothes of one Artose Pinner. "He's wearin' the cape," said Jared Lorenzen.
  • White Lightning strikes again, smoking another record    Another week, another record for Kentucky return man Derek Abney. Abney returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to set an NCAA record with six punt and kickoff returns for scores in one season.
  • will he stay or will he go?    Dewayne Robertson defies the laws of physics. At 300-plus pounds, Kentucky's splendid defensive tackle moves so lithely, there is no way he is bound by the same principles of motion and gravity as mere mortals.
  • Capable hands lift Wildcats    When the University of Kentucky absolutely, positively needed to run out the clock, Artose Pinner was more reliable than FedEx.
  • Abney's just 'awesome' with sixth return for TD    Derek Abney, the best ever.   ''Wow, I don't even know what to say. It's awesome,'' the University of Kentucky junior said after breaking the NCAA single-season record for touchdown returns of punts and kickoffs.
  • It's Taps for Vandy but never for Pinner    We've seen Artose Pinner do just about everything on the football field this year.

  • Wild Cat emotions on Senior Day    You can say this about the 2002 Kentucky football season: There never seems to be a week lacking emotion. • Pinner closes in on 1,000 yards rushing for season    University of Kentucky senior tailback Artose Pinner will likely surpass 1,000 yards rushing on the season Saturday. Running back Dontae Walker, who has been slowed by various nagging injuries, also could play today after missing the Memphis game
